10 ways to save fuel while driving your vehicle

Changing your driving style to eco-driving is easy and once mastered, it not only save you money but also help you do your bit for the environment.

Eco-driving is all about about driving your car more efficiently which means your car will produce less carbon dioxide (CO2), the main gas contributing to climate change.

Remember to follow the steps below and you’ll soon be saving money and reducing your car’s impact on the environment.

  1. Revs – Watch your revs and change up gear before 2,500 rpm (petrol) and 2,000 rpm (diesel).
  2. Drive smoothly – by anticipating road conditions and avoiding sharp acceleration and heavy braking.
  3. Air Conditioning – Use air conditioning sparingly, it significantly increases fuel consumption.
  4. Most Efficient Speed – Drive at the most efficient speed which is typically around 55-65mph depending on your car. Faster speeds will greatly increase your fuel consumption.
  5. Don’t pre-heat the Engine – drive off immediately when starting from cold – idling the engine wastes fuel.
  6. Improve Aerodynamics – accessories such as roof racks, bike carriers and roof boxes significantly affect your car’s aerodynamics and reduce fuel efficiency, remove when not in use.
  7. Short Journeys – avoid them as cold engines use almost twice as much fuel and catalytic converters can take five miles to become effective.
  8. Plan your Journey – avoid getting lost, congestion and road works.
  9. Tyre Pressure – Check your tyre pressure regularly. Under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption by up to 3% and are dangerous.
  10. Switch off your Engine – saves fuel when in a traffic jams and reduces emissions if you expect to be there for more than a minute.
