Top 10 Energy Saving Tips for the Home

Easy ways to save energy around the home

If you’re wondering where to start saving energy, then follow this list to start saving.

  1. Thermostat – Turning your thermostat down to reduce your room temperature by 1°C can help cut your heating bills by up to 10%!
  2. Hot Water – Don’t warm you hot water up too much. Your cylinder thermostat shouldn’t be higher than 60°C/140°F.
  3. Curtains – Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
  4. Lights – Always switch off the lights when you leave a room.
  5. Standby – Never leave appliances on standby. Switch them off at the wall.
  6. Washing Machine – Use half-load or economy programmes when not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher.
  7. Kettle – Only boil as much water as you need, whilst making sure the element is covered.
  8. Taps – Fix any leaking taps. A dripping hot tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath.
  9. Light Bulbs – Use energy saving light bulbs. They last 12 times longer than ordinary lightbulbs and use much less energy.
